The Motherland Influence presents:
Welcome! African, Latin & Caribbean music.
Celebrating the lives of two greats in African rumba & salsa to start.
Joseph Kabasele aka Le Grand Kalle of RDCongo’s l’African Jazz passed on Febraury 11, 1983.
He was the great grandfather of modern African rumba, a sound that by the late 1960s had spread from Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) to most of sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and beyond.
Medoune Diallo of Senegal’s Africando just moved on yesterday. Africando has been, of course, one of the premiere African salsa bands of the last few decades. I would be very surprised if Medoune Diallo did not listen to l’African Jazz in his youth as well as Senegalese and Cuban records.
