Whoa. What a great show at the Broadberry Sunday night. Double bill of Richmond residents Natalie Prass and Angelica Garcia. Angelica as the opener blew it up with a performance that evoked Janis Joplin, Laura Nyro, Kate Bush and Juana Molina. Amazing solo work. Natalie Prass’ new album is a tremendous jump from her wonderful first record. Produced again by Matthew White and featuring a bunch of great local musicians, it’s a wonderful evocation of torch song drama, political anthems and roller skate bubblegum. Performed live with her crack touring band, that unlikely combination took the roof off the Broadberry. And dude, the lady can move!
So tonight’s show is inspired by these two performers. I’ll leave it to you to figure out just how. Enjoy.
