ON FRIDAY, OCT. 7, TWO NEW EXHIBITS WILL BE OPENING AT THE RICHMOND MAIN PUBLIC LIBRARY. IN THE DOOLEY FOYER, YOU CAN SEE "ABRAHAM LINCOLN: A MAN OF HIS TIME, A MAN FOR ALL TIMES" ­–A NATIONAL EXHIBITION ORGANIZED BY THE GILDER LEHRMAN INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN HISTORY. AND IN THE DOOLEY HALL  "IMAGES FROM LINCOLN'S TIME" WILL BE ON DISPLAY. THIS EXHIBIT SHOWS PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY OF CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENTS BY RICHMOND ARTIST WINNIE ANNE WRIGHT AND RESOURCES FROM THE RICHMOND PUBLIC LIBRARY'S COLLECTIONS. The highly anticipated Carnival of 5 Fires (Year 5) will have a sneak peek kick-off on Friday, October 7th (in conjunction with Gallery5's season opening and public reception of 3 new exhibitions and benefit events.)  This kick off will feature live stage performances and an outdoor street festival full of fire, magic, music and dance. Scheduled Carnival of 5 Fires festivities will take place the following week on October 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th with a jam packed line-up of vaudeville inspired performers of all shapes, sizes and styles. The 4th Annual HandsOn Day will take place Saturday, October 29th.  On this day of giving back, HandsOn Greater Richmond will rally and organize 1,000 volunteers to tackle community issues through a day of service.  35 projects will take place at local nonprofits, schools, and parks.  Volunteers will build trails, paint walls and murals, repair homes, feed the hungry, sort toys and books, organize crafts, plant flowers, care for animals – you name it.   Come on out on your own, or bring your friends, family, or co-workers.  Register for a project today atwww.HandsOnRVA.org.  

Join SAGE Central Virginia, AARP Virginia, SONG (Southerners on New Ground), and the Asian Chamber of Commerce and several other community groups for a Community Empowerment Workshop being held Tuesday, October 4 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm at the Library of Virginia.Virginia is more racially and culturally diverse than it has ever been. To ensure all communities are fairly represented, all individuals should be involved, including individuals from the LGBT, Hispanic, Asian and African American communities. This workshop will focus on what you need to know to fully participate in the political process, learn the ins and outs of redistricting and improve lives in your community. It will also be a chance to bring diverse communities together to help find common ground with the goal of improving the community.This is to be held at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219.
