On Thursday, October 20th at 6:00 PM, congregation Or Ami will present “Reel Theology: Searching for Bobby Fischer,” about a boy chess prodigy who seeks success without becoming “difficult.” Afterwards, a discussion will be lead by Rabbi Ben Romer. From October 14th through the 16th, the Richmond Folk Festival will embrace the heritage and traditions of all Americans through performances of continuous music and dance on six stages. The festival is located on the banks of downtown Richmond's riverfront, from 2nd to 7th streets and from Byrd Street to the river. For more information, visit www.richmondfolkfestival.org.
On Tuesday, October 18th, from noon to 1 PM, the Library of Virginia will hold "A Perfect Steel-Trap": Resources at the Library of Virginia: Documenting John  Brown's Raid at Library of Virginia. R. Thomas Crew, a senior reference archivist at the Library of Virginia, will discuss the archival holdigs at the library documenting John Brown’s attempt to capture the US Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1859. VCU Cinematheque  series presents: "Nostalgia for the Light" at Grace St. Theatre, 934 W. Grace St, on October 18th at 7pm.  As astronomers peer deep into the cosmos in search for answers concerning the origins of life, nearby, a group of women sift through the sand searching for body parts of loved ones, dumped unceremoniously by Pinochet’s regime. On Friday, October 14th, and Sunday, October 16th, the University of Richmond International Film series presents “Mascarades,” a good-natures, gently amusing comedy from Algeria about the life of a somewhat dysfunctional family. On Wednesday, October 19th, from 10 to 11:45 am and 1 to 2:45 pm, the Museum of the Confederacy will teach about the different types of photography used in the years leading up to and during the American Civil War. This session will include an interactive program and a tour of the White House of the Confederacy. James River Film @VisArts presents the Halloween Horror Showcase on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 PM. The Showcase will include two screenings: HP Lovecrafts’ Pickman’s Model and Pumpkinhead starring Lance Henrikson. There will also be a horror trivia contest with prizes from Fangoria magazine. The event will feature a signing by authors from the new horror anthology “Richmond Macabre.” The event will take place at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, located at 1812 W. Main Street.
