“Dedicated Writer and Feminist, Paula Gunn Allen"-Orangyna

A registered member of the Laguna Pueblo Tribe, Paula Gunn Allen was born in New Mexico in 1939.  Her mother was of Laguna Pueblo, Sioux and Scottish descent and her father was of Lebanese ancestry.
An avid reader early on, Allen credits her discovery of the works of poet and novelist Gertrude Stein during high school as an influence in her own early writings.  Her mixed origins provided her a source of hope and inspiration.
Completing her Ph. D. in American Studies with a concentration in Native-American Studies in 1975, she soon became a renowned American Indian literary scholar and spokesperson.  In 1986, in her introduction to “The Sacred Hoop: Recovering the Feminine in American Indian Traditions,” she identified herself as a lesbian, beginning her role model status for other lesbian and gay American-Indian writers.
