“Maurice Kenny’s Many Pieces"

Maurice Kenny was born in Watertown, New York in 1929. His father was a Mohawk Indian, and his mother part Seneca.  Kenny’s early interest in poetry began as a teenager when his interest in the poetry of Walt Whitman guided his own writings that drew upon American Indian oral traditions and cultures.
After university studies, Kenny issued his first poetry collection at age 28.  Preferring to call his works “pieces,” he claimed his gay identity in 1976 with Tinselled Bucks: An Historical Study in Indian Homosexuality, as well as with the poem, “Winkte.”
Kenny’s pieces have been published in countless collections of poetry, fiction and essays and in nearly 100 journals in many languages. They’ve also been included in TV, radio and film productions. Undoubtedly, he ranks among the top American Indian writers.
