Liz Humes | Friday Noon – 12:30pm

Books are wonderful and deeply rewarding but the truth is most people don’t read -very often. They’re also expensive and time consuming. Wordy Birds is a program about books and ideas that airs every Friday at noon on WRIR. Host Liz Humes has read a book a week since February 2005, when the first version of Wordy Birds debuted on WRIR 97.3 FM.

The program brings to the airwaves both local and international best-selling authors. The only limitation in topics covered is that the interviews are done face to face. It’s not high-brow book radio, it’s a book show for people who don’t read, hosted by someone that does. In turn you get researched informed conversations that are informed, engaging and sometimes funny.

An archive of Wordy Birds can be found on www.wordybirds.org. Publicists and authors interested in interviews can email Liz at liz(dot).(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thanks for tuning in.

This Way Out is the award-winning internationally distributed weekly LGBT radio program, currently airing on over 175 local community radio stations around the world, and on Costa Rica-based short wave station Radio For Peace International. The half-hour magazine-style program is produced in Los Angeles and distributed to stations via two free-access Web sites, http://www.radio4all.net and http://www.indymedia.org, as well as through Pacifica Radio's Audioport and KU satellite, and via satellite in Australia on the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia's ComRadSat. The show is additionally postal-mailed on CD to stations that have no online access, and to individual subscribers. You can also hear This Way Out via direct satellite to home and cable outlets across Europe, and in the Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific regions, on the London-based World Radio Network.

Despite the limitations of a "tattered shoestring budget", This Way Out programming has been honored with multiple awards from the U.S. National Federation Of Community Broadcasters and the Radio and Television News Association, by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Parents, Families and Friends Of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), the Los Angeles chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), and internationally by Tupilak (the organization of lesbian and gay cultural workers in the Nordic area).

“Prom Queen"

At first they taunted and called her names, even writing on her locker. But then the seniors at McFatter Technical High School in Florida elected 17-year-old Andrew Viveros their 2011 Prom Queen.
Known as Andii and born male, she had publicly presented herself as female for the past two years. She plans to change her name to Andrea sometime in the future.
Running against 14 contestants, she was shocked when they called her name.  Some students were against her running, but with the support of her parents and a new school principal who encouraged her not back down, she accepted the crown while wearing her royal blue evening gown.
Her parents, Oscar and Bernadette, now view Andrew as a straight female and remember their trip to Disney World when the much younger Andrew wanted to try on Cinderella’s dress.
