“A Slogan With Rage" Read By: Miss Heavenly Leigh Kennedy
Starting in 2009, a group of transgender activists in Philadelphia, calling themselves RAGE, were all fired up. Their local transit authority was issuing transit tickets that were gender specific, marked M for male or F for female. The activists insisted that the practice made life difficult, degrading and dangerous for anyone whose appearance was nonconforming. Their slogan was, “Keep Transit Officials Out of Your Pants!”
The group then collected testimony from 20 transgender riders, describing their plight. They sent their concerns to the transit authority’s Community Advisory Committee, which unanimously recommended the policy be changed. The transit authority agreed to implement the change as soon as their new fare system kicked in.
Yet in July of 2011, it appeared that these activists were in for a long haul.
