“Lana Lawless Swings for Equality" Read By: Miss Heavenly Leigh – Kennedy

In October of 2010, transgender golfer Lana Lawless filed suit against the Ladies Professional Golf Association, or LPGA, as well as the group, Long Drivers of America, or LDA.  The 57-year-old golfer said they had violated the civil rights laws in California by banning her from competition that year.  Lawless said the LPGA’s rule that a player must be “female at birth” is outdated and discriminatory.
Lawless won the world championship long-drive golf competition in the women’s division in 2008.  She had been banned because Long Drivers of America, who organized the event, had changed its policy to be in line with the LPGA.
Lawless, a retired police officer, says she has lost a commercial golf sponsor because she has been prevented from competing.
