“The Odd Tug-of-War" Read By: Virginia Delegate Joe Morrisey

The actual bullhorn Harvey Milk used during his years of activism was retrieved from the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy in San Francisco for use in the movie, “MILK.”
It had been loaned to the school by Cleve Jones.
After filming, Jones decided to hold on to the bullhorn instead of returning it to the Academy. He claimed someone there had left batteries inside, a potential corrosive.
But some parents and students at the school thought the school should have the bullhorn. Others cited the historic significance of the artifact and the importance of its protection. City archivist Susan Goldstein said,  “It is the symbol of his protests and activism. It’s literally Harvey’s mouthpiece.”
As a compromise, Jones loaned the bullhorn to the GLBT Historical Society in the Castro for an upcoming exhibit, with free admission for the kids.
