“Counting Virginians" – Read by Orangyna

In July 2011, the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law released it same-sex couple study for Virginia based on the U.S. 2010 Census.  The study revealed that there were 20,540 same-sex couples in the state, or 6.7 same-sex couples per 1,000 households.
The top five cities and counties with the highest concentration of gay and lesbian couples were Alexandria, Nelson County, Arlington County, the City of Richmond and Norfolk. Sixty-one percent of the same-sex couples were female, and 39% were male.  Twenty percent were raising children.
Surprisingly, a higher than average concentration of same-sex couples lived in rural areas, including parts of Montgomery and Russell Counties in southwest Virginia, and Essex County in the Northern Neck.
