“Clandestine Communications No More"
Read By:Autumn Reinhardt Simpson
The holidays are a time for celebration and family togetherness. But things are quite different for military personnel serving our country around the globe. All they can hope for is a phone call or email from their loved ones back home. Hearing a loved one’s voice can bring a bit of holiday cheer to a combat zone, if only for a moment.
This year, for the first time ever, gay and lesbian service members in the U.S. can make those calls and send their emails to their same-sex partners without fear of being drummed out of the military.
That’s because the heavy yoke of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was lifted on September 20, 2011, allowing all service members to serve honestly, openly, and in the holiday spirit.
