“No More Kisses for Oscar Wilde"
Read by Lloyd Bryant)

On November 30, 2011, the newly-renovated tomb of famed playwright Oscar Wilde was unveiled. Wilde’s grandson, Merlin Holland, along with British actor Rupert Everrett and French and Irish officials, attended the short ceremony held at this most-visited grave in Paris’s most famous cemetery.
Wilde died penniless in 1900 in Paris. His faithful friend Robert Ross commissioned the tomb designed by Sir Jacob Epstein that was completed in 1914. But decades of graffiti and lipstick kisses had degraded the stone.  Now restored, the installation of a glass screen will prevent future damage. And with its designation as a historic monument, hefty fines should deter unsightly graffiti.
As for the kisses, fans now kiss the tree next to Wilde’s tomb and remember “one of the world’s most celebrated writers.”
