“And the Vito Russo Award Goes to… Ricky Martin"
(Read by Cameron Hunt)

It was all smiles on March 19th, 2011 for Latin pop star Ricky Martin, when New York’s Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, better known as GLAAD, honored his work as a gay role model.  It was an evening to recognize the best portrayals of gay community members in film, television, radio, music, newspaper and blogs.
Martin had recently appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” in the episode titled “Ricky Martin Coming Out As a Gay Man and a New Dad.”  He became a father of twin boys with a surrogate mother in 2008.
Martin received the Vito Russo award, named for the late gay activist and film historian, saying,  “I just want to be free.  I can say today, I am free.”
