On October 26, 2011, former NBA basketball player John Amaechi was awarded the Order of the British Empire during an official ceremony held by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The award was created during WWI, in 1917, by King George V and today rewards outstanding achievement and service to society.
Amaechi was the first openly-gay NBA player when he came out in his 2007 book, “Man in the Middle.” He also set up his own basketball center in his native Manchester, campaigned for human rights and LGBT issues, and worked with at-risk youth.
Amaechi credited much of his success to the support of his family and friends. He continues to promote equality and human rights in the UK and worldwide.
