“National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" Read By: Chris Cox

Commemorated during Black History Month, February 7, 2012 marks the 12th year for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  This commemoration day was founded in 1999 by five national organizations and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
With as many as 20,000 Blacks in the U.S. testing positive for HIV each year, this grassroots initiative brings to this community four specific focal points – education, testing, involvement, and treatment.
Each year a group of twelve organizations provide guidance and direction for the initiative, with the group Healthy Black Communities leading the way.  Past national spokespersons include President Barack Obama, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and actor-author Harper Hill.
