“Nell Carter, Pop-Soul Belter" Read By: Jo Anne Colbert-Gunn
Known for her dynamic performances on stage, television, film and record, Nell Carter built a successful show business career, despite a number of personal tragedies.
She was born Nell Ruth Hardy in Birmingham, Alabama in 1948. When she was a small child, her father died suddenly after stepping on a live power line. At 15, she was raped at gunpoint.
Comforting herself with music, Nell performed in church choirs, youth groups and on local radio.
But it was in the late 1960’s that she pursued her calling to the stage. She moved to New York, changed her name to Carter, studied acting, and began singing at nightclubs.
Nell Carter’s big success came in 1978 with her run in the musical, “Ain’t Misbehavin.”
More about that saucy role tomorrow.
