“Hillary’s Power"
Virginia Sate Delegate, Betsy Carr
In a speech on December 6, 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave an impassioned speech on international LGBT rights. In part, she said, “Like being a woman, like being a racial religious tribal or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are Human Rights and Human Rights are gay rights.”
Earlier in the day, an official memorandum issued by President Obama directed the U.S. government to consider gay rights when making aid and asylum decisions. Homosexual acts are illegal in most African countries including Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Malawi.
Shortly after Clinton’s speech, Malawi’s Justice Minister pledged to “review a series of controversial laws including a ban on homosexual acts.”
