“Virginia’s First Openly Gay Senator" Read By: Virginia Delagate – Joe Morrisey

On Election Day,  November 8, 2011, democrat Adam Ebbin won election to the Virginia Senate – becoming the state’s first openly-gay senator.  He defeated Republican challenger Timothy McGhee by a wide margin, in a district that includes parts of Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax.
In 2003, Ebbin was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, becoming the first openly-gay legislator in Virginia. During his stint in the House, he was a champion for LGBT equality and garnered the respect of those around him.
Planning to continue his advocacy, one of his top priorities in the Senate is the elimination of job discrimination against state government employees. His other causes include improving public schools, expanding Virginia’s transit system and cleaning up Virginia’s environment.
