Wednesday, February 29 – "Gay and Lesbian Tourism Soars in Mexico City" – Heather Wright
Since lawmakers legalized same-sex marriage in Mexico City in March of 2010, Mexico’s capital has seen a huge increase in gay and lesbian tourism. According to the government tourism office, the city netted nearly 6 million pesos (about half a million dollars) in the second half of 2010.
The city has actively courted the gay market knowing the statistics that show gay tourists spend almost 50% more that straight tourists while on vacation. Seeing great possibilities in this niche market, they hope Mexico City can compete with other gay destinations like San Francisco, Buenos Aires and Toronto.
City officials even offered a free honeymoon in Mexico City and the beach resort of Cancun, to the first same-sex couple to marry in Argentina.
