Thursday, March 1 – "Same-sex Marriage in Washington State" – Autumn Reinhardt Simpson
On February 8, 2012, a bill approving Same-sex marriage won final legislative approval from the Washington State House of Representatives, with a vote of 55 – 43. The vote came just one day after a federal appeals court ruled California’s voter-approved gay marriage ban unconstitutional.
Governor Christine Gregoire signed the bill at 11:30 a.m., just one day before Valentine’s Day. The measure will not take effect before early June, but that date may be in jeopardy since Catholic bishops and other religious conservatives vow to seek its repeal at the polls in November. Those supporting the bill included fair-minded Washingtonians and several prominent Washington-based companies employing huge numbers of workers in the state, including Microsoft, Amazon and Starbucks.
Other supporters included Representative Maureen Walsh, a Walla Walla, Washington Republican.
