Today's Rainbow Minute is at 7.59, 12.29 and 4.59. You can hear Melinda Skinner reading "The Jane Addams Stamp"…

Born the youngest of eight children in Cedarville, Illinois in 1860, Jane Addams grew up to be a role model for middle-class women.  She was a pioneer settlement worker and founded the Hull House, a social welfare center in Chicago. An overachiever, she was also an author, sociologist, and leader of woman suffrage and world peace.  In 1931, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1940, the U.S. Post Office Department posthumously honored Addams in their Famous American Stamp Series by issuing a 10 cent stamp featuring her portrait.

During Addams’ life, she had relationships with Ellen Starr and Mary Rozet Smith, then described as “romantic friendships” or Boston Marriages.”
