Wednesday, March 14 – "Barbara Jordan, Forever" – Soda Nobuhle

On September 16, 2011, the U. S. Postal Service issued a Barbara Jordan commemorative, forever stamp. It was priced at 44 cents. The first-day issue was in Houston, Texas, the place of her birth in 1936.
Jordan was the first African American woman elected to the Texas legislature, and the first African American woman elected to the U. S. Congress from the South.
The stamp is the 34th in the Black Heritage series and features an oil painting of Jordan by Albert Stark, re-created from a black and white photograph.
Upon Jordan’s death in 1996, she was survived by her longtime partner Nancy Earl, with whom she had shared a home as a devoted couple for 30 years.
