“Babe Zaharias, the Texas Tomboy"

Born Mildred Didrikson in 1911, she went on to excel in every sport she tried, from track and field to bowling.  Taking the name Babe from the baseball star Babe Ruth, she was named All-American in high school basketball three years in a row.  In the 1932 Olympics, she won two gold medals. She was even named Woman of the Year six times.
Babe married professional wrestler, George Zaharias, and took his last name.
Honored on a red, 18-cent U.S. postage stamp issued in 1981,  she’s pictured in a dress, holding a loving cup.
Babe was diagnosed with cancer in 1953. After surgery, she staged a miraculous comeback, and went on to win her third U.S. Open.
Three years later, however, cancer finally defeated her.
