“An Eight-Cent Postage Stamp for Willa Cather"

Credited as one of the most widely-read female authors of the 20th century, Willa Cather achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains.  In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her book, One of Ours, written a year earlier.
Cather was also honored by the U. S. Postal Service with an eight-cent commemorative stamp designed by Mark English.  The stamp, part of the American Arts Issue, contains a profile of Cather
with a pioneer family in a covered wagon in the background.  It was first issued on September 20th, 1973, in Cather’s home town of Red Cloud, Nebraska.
Cather’s most significant friendships were with women, most notably editor Edith Lewis, with whom she lived for 39 years, until Cather’s death in 1947.
