“Remembering Elizabeth Taylor" Read By:Lindsey Spurrier
Exactly one year ago, on March 23, 2011, the world said goodbye to an angel and icon of the LGBT community – actress Elizabeth Taylor. She made AIDS her life’s cause during a time when Hollywood and politicians considered it the third rail. In fact, she was active in the cause, while wheelchair bound, right up to her death at age 79.
During her lifetime, she raised $270,000,000 for HIV/AIDS, with the bulk of her estate going to AIDS charities.
Taylor’s involvement began in December 1984, just after good friend Rock Hudson died from AIDS complications. It was then that she became a major supporter of AIDS Project Los Angeles. She later said, “I will not be silenced, and I will not give up, and I will not be ignored.”
