Wednesday, April 4 – "Glad Days Ahead for Glad Day Bookshop" – George A. Reuther
Sad faces prevailed in December, 2011 when Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto, Canada announced it was up for sale. They became glad faces in February, 2012 when it was discovered that 20 supportive investors had purchased the bookshop with plans for keeping it open.
In its early days, the bookshop was a hub for the gay and lesbian liberation movement in Canada and fought and won battles against censorship, as some of their materials had been confiscated by Canadian Customs during importation.
Glad Day Bookshop, opened by Jearld Moldenhauer in 1970, and now deemed the oldest surviving LGBT bookstore in North America, will continue to be a center of culture and creativity for the community.
