“The Centennial of Harry Hay’s Birth" Read by: Sally Holzgrefe

Activist Harry Hay was an early leader in the American gay liberation movement. He helped found a number of gay organizations including the Mattachine Society, the first sustained gay rights group in the United States.
Born on April 7, 1912, 100 years ago this Saturday, he eventually helped found the Radical Faeries in the late 1970’s, a gay men’s spirituality movement and back-to-nature group that celebrated gay male sexuality.
Harry cemented a relationship with engineer John Burnside that was long lasting, and together they became committed partners in the struggle for gay rights.  John was at Harry’s side during his death in 2002 along with caregivers from Radical Faeries, who sprinkled rose petals over his body.
