“Whitney Houston’s Surprise Appearance" Read by: Rebecca Moon
In the summer of 1999, Whitney Houston flew in from Detroit for a surprise guest appearance at the 13th Annual New York City Lesbian and Gay Pride Dance. It took place on a Sunday night on Manhattan’s west side, as a wrap-up to the city’s Pride Week.
At the time, it was a tradition for top divas to show up at the event and surprise the crowd – and when Whitney came onstage, the crowd of 7,000 went into a frenzy.
Whitney performed her most recent hits, “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay,” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” encouraging the crowd to sing along.
Those present described that crowd as “wild.” Whitney herself defined the event as “incredible.”
