“Icon to Drag Performers" Read by: Miss Heaven-Leigh Kennedy

When news came of Whitney Houston’s death on February 11, 2012, no one was more shocked than members of Richmond’s drag community who had performed her numbers or were inspired by her music.
Incorporating Whitney’s songs into their acts were Kelly Branch, Una Vidalia, Zakia Jemaceye, and Alvion Arnelle Davenport and many others.
I’m drag performer Miss Heaven-Leigh Kennedy, and for me, Whitney represents the best of the 80s as far as coming out of the closet was concerned. Her song, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” just said it all. Dancing means celebrating life. And thanks to her, Boy George and other gay icons, I finally got my chance to come out of the closet and dance with somebody. I’ve been dancing ever since. Rest in peace, Whitney. You earned it.
