“Zakia Jemaceye’s First Time" Read by: Miss Heaven-Leigh Kennedy

A number of Richmond drag performers are remembered for performing Whitney Houston numbers to enthusiastic audiences.  For Alvion Arnelle Davenport and Zakia Jemaceye, that experience was especially memorable because their first performances ever were impersonating Whitney Houston and lipsyncing one of her songs.
Zakia was deeply affected by Whitney’s death, saying, “When I got the news of her passing, my heart was extremely heavy. I remember her debut on MTV as I danced in the mirror and sang her songs with a towel on my head.  So I wanted to be her.  The first song I ever performed was “I Want to Dance With Somebody.” It was my time to shine and live out my childhood fantasies on stage with all the lights, make-up and costumes.
More tomorrow.
