“Landmark Settlement in Minnesota"

Thursday, April 26   – Alvion Arnell Davenport

For years, students in the Anoka-Hennepin School District have reported incidents of harassment and bullying, including mocking and physical harm.  Nine students – four of them identifying as gay – ended up taking their own lives.  The school district, serving 39,000 students, is represented in Congress by Tea Party supporter Michele Bachman.
In 2011, six students sued the school district in a lawsuit that described an “epidemic of anti-gay and gender-based harassment within District schools.” The Justice Department stepped in and found that sex-based harassment had created a “hostile environment” and that physical and verbal bullying was severe and widespread. It also found that kids perceived as gay and those whose parents were gay or lesbian were being harassed.
Then on March 5, 2012, a settlement was reached.
All about that tomorrow.
