“Settlement Reached in Minnesota" (Read by: Alvion Arnell Davenport)
In March, 2012 a settlement was reached between the Anoka-Hennepin School District and the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education and six current and former students who were bullied.
The 61-page agreement addresses harassment and discrimination of LGBT students, and includes gender identity. The district will ban gay-bashing and baiting, and ban and track those who are harassed due to their perceived lack of gender conformity.
The settlement includes $270,000, split equally between them. It also requires the district to have an outside equality consultant from the Great Lakes Equality Center and a Title IX coordinator to oversee harassment policies and check compliance.
As Anoka High School ninth grader, Dylon Frei put it, “Every student deserves a good education.”
