“Profiles in Courage" (read by: Andrew Barnes)

On March 6, 2012, officials at the John F. Kennedy Library announced that former Iowa Supreme Court Justices Marsha Ternus, Michael Streit and David Baker would receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.  All three had lost their 2010 election bid, after anti-gay organizations claimed they were “legislating from the bench.”  Those organizations had poured millions of dollars into unseating the justices because they joined the court’s 2009 unanimous decision to legalize same-sex marriage.
The award took its name from then-Senator Kennedy’s 1957 Pulitzer prize-winning book, “Profiles in Courage,” and was established in 1989 by members of the Kennedy family to honor and celebrate the sort of political courage the late president most admired.
Ex-justices Ternus, Streit and Baker will be honored for their ruling in May.
