“Remembering Daniel Zamudio" Read By: Jackie Mullins

On March 30, 2012, thousand of Chileans and foreign dignitaries turned out in Santiago for the funeral of 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio.  Daniel had been targeted and was brutally beaten and tortured by four men because he was gay.  The tragedy sparked a national outcry and calls for passage of an anti-discrimination law, which was passed just five days later.
Thousands of Chileans poured in from all parts of the country for the funeral, holding rainbow flags, signs and photographs of Daniel.  Many also threw flower petals and chanted for justice along the funeral procession.  In honor of Daniel, his family home was adorned with flowers and white balloons.
Afterwards, mourners gathered at a stage to celebrate Daniels’ life. As musicians played, a speaker urged passage of laws to protect gay and transgender people.
