“A First for Japan" (read by: Elaine Summerfield)

In an election on April 24, 2011, Taiga Ishikawa won a seat in a Tokyo Ward Assembly, making him Japan’s first openly-gay candidate to do so.  Ishikawa said, “I hope my election victory will help our fellows nationwide to have hope for tomorrow as many of them cannot accept themselves, feel lonely and isolated and even commit suicide.”  Prior to the election, no other openly-gay politician had won office in Japan.
Ishikawa previously came out in his book, Where Is My Boyfriend, published in 2002.  Many readers of his book expressed to him their feelings of isolation, that later prompted him to host events so they could met others.  Ultimately, Ishikawa founded a non-profit organization called “Peer Friends,” which hosts events all over Japan.
