“Chay Yew’s Big Break" (read by: Elaine Summerfield)

Chay Yew’s college training included a stint at Pepperdine University in Malibu in his teens, and a move to Boston University, where he earned an M.F.A. in communications.  He returned to Singapore in 1988 where he wrote his first play, “As If He Hears.”
It was banned by government censors because the gay character acted “too sympathetic and too straight-looking.”
Yew never shied away from controversial subject matter despite his negative encounters early on. He hit paydirt in 1992 with “Porcelain,” a provocative play based on events leading to a crime of passion – selling out and earning the 1993 London Fringe Award for Best Play.
While creating his own works or adapting and directing those of others, he said, “The one place I always feel at home is in the theater.”
