"World Oceans Day, 2012" – Ruth Morrison
Proposed in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United States in 2008. It is now observed every June 8.
The theme for 2012 is, “Youth: The Next Wave for Change.” Youth are the most motivated and knowledgeable segment of the population when it comes to the environment and its protection, so we are in good hands.
Ongoing scientific study of the oceans brings with it new discoveries. A recent study of 120 Bottlenose Dolphins near Australia revealed that some form same-sex pair bonds. Also observed were extensive bisexuality, with periods of exclusive homosexuality. Some same-sex bonding appears to be long lasting. One herd of seven male dolphins under observation spent 17 years together in an intimate group.
