“Bayard Rustin, Offensive Lineman" (read by: Les Quitana)

It was around 1929 when young Bayard Rustin first played football at the only high school in his county, West Chester Senior High School. The popular, good-looking student was already good at tennis, track and basketball, and now he wanted to tackle football.
Described by other teammates as “tough,” and with “bones and muscles like steel,” he made all-county lineman in his junior year.  But he noticed he was treated differently.  For away games, the black team members couldn’t stay at the YMCA or eat at certain restaurants.  And some schools refused to allow their all-white teams to play in West Chester.
So Rustin organized a protest, refusing to play without equal accommodations.  Thus began years of protests for civil rights, leading to the infamous 1963 March on Washington.
More about Rustin tomorrow.
