“Walter Naegle and Bayard Rustin" (read by: Les Quintana)

Walter Naegle was Bayard Rustin’s partner until Rustin’s death on August 24, 1987, at age 75.  They had met one afternoon in 1977 in Times Square.  At the time, Naegle was 27 and Rustin was 65.  They quickly cemented a relationship and worked, lived and traveled together.  Upon Rustin’s death, Naegle was executor of Rustin’s estate.
But now Naegle’s role has shifted from partner to historian.  He has dedicated 2012 and 2013 to spreading Bayard Rustin’s Legacy, from the 100th Anniversary of his birth on March 17, 1912, to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington on August 28, 1963.  Rustin was considered the architect of that march for civil rights.
As Naegle helps organize events and provides documents, he feels Rustin’s spirit is with him.
More tomorrow.
