“Mr. Gay World Contest" (read by: Dustin Richardson)

Debuting in Canada in 2009, the Mr. Gay World contest came to South Africa in 2012. The April event included 22 contestants and its first black African contestants.  But not all of them had it easy.
Mr. Gay Ethiopia was disowned by his father when he heard about the contest, and Mr. Gay Zimbabwe pulled out when his family received death threats.
The contest, including an essay test on the history of the gay rights movement and a swim suit competition, was won by Andreas Derlrth, a 32-year old German living in New Zealand.
Event organizers declared the event a major step in the battle against homophobia in Africa. And with the winner having received a cash prize of $25,000 in travel vouchers, he can spread the word of equality.

airing at 7:59, 12:29, and 4:59!
