Lost Music Saloon: July 23, 2012: 5-7 p.m.: ‘Rodriguez’ Radio Special! presents:
Welcome to a special edition of the Lost Music Saloon. I'm airing a one-hour radio special today: 'Rodriguez: Searching For Sugar Man'. It's about the strange, true story of Sixto Rodriguez, a singer out of Detroit who put out a couiple of albums back in the early 1970's that promptly went nowhere here in the United States, and Rodriguez slid from public view to a life of manual labor. Somehow, however, he became a star on par with Elvis, Dylan and the Rolling Stones in South Africa. But Rodriguez never knew about his foreign fame, and he was rumored to be dead among his fans in South Africa. That situation remained static for many years until some fans decided to try and track him down…and found him. A documentary has been filmed about the story ('Searching For Sugar Man'), which is scheduled to open here in Richmond in mid-August, but the soundtrack to that film should be out tomorrow.
Enjoy!
