“A Tribute to The Caregivers,”    Reader: Allen Browne

In Washington, D.C, surrounding the Dupont Circle Metro Station’s Q Street entrance, is an inscription – a tribute to the volunteers and caregivers who gave tirelessly to people living with HIV and AIDS.

It reads –

“Thus in silence, in dreams’ projections,
Returning, resuming, I thread my way through the hospitals:
The hurt and wounded I pacify with soothing hand,
I sit by the restless all the dark night – some are so young
Some suffer so much – I recall the experience sweet and sad.”

The inscription was dedicated on July 14, 2007.

The words were lifted from Walt Whitman’s poem, “The Dresser,” written in 1865.  It tells of his experiences as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War, tending swarms of sick and dying boys.
