“Down on the East Hill Farm"

In 1966, during the Vietnam War, Allen Ginsberg formed a nonprofit organization, called, the Committee of Poetry Inc. Funded largely by Ginsberg’s poetry reading, the group helped small presses and impoverished poets. In 1968, with Ginsberg as treasurer, the Committee purchased a dilapidated four-bedroom farmhouse on 80 acres of untended land on East Hill outside Cherry Valley, New York.
Known as East Hill Farm, it was meant to be “a haven for comrades in distress,” a place to get off drugs and work on artistic projects. With a back-to-nature environment, it was off the electric grid. A small windmill provided limited electricity. While propane lamps and heaters were installed, a wood stove provided most of the heat.
The farm was more successful at fueling creativity than stemming drug use.
