“Alan Turing Meets Christopher Morcom"
Reader: Jim Nelson
It was 1928 when Alan Turing met classmate Christopher Morcom. Both attended Sherborne School and possessed an intense interest in mathematics and science. For Alan, it was the beginning of an intellectual companionship and close friendship he’d never had.
Alan introduced Christopher to the ideas of Albert Einstein. Christopher returned the favor, helping refine Alan’s social graces. Christopher also taught Alan to be methodical in his work and experimentation.
But on February 13, 1930, Christopher died unexpectedly at age 18 of bovine tuberculosis. Alan was devastated. Nonetheless, he vowed to continue his work to the glory and memory of his comrade. In 1931, he secured a scholarship at King’s College, Cambridge, renowned for its excellence in mathematics and physics – where he could freely express his ideas.
