“Harvey Fierstein’s Sissy Duckling"

In 1999, three-time Tony Award-winning writer, actor, and gay activist Harvey Fierstein created a lovable duckling named Elmer.  But Elmer is different.  He would rather play make-believe, decorate cookies and put on puppet shows instead of playing baseball.  For that he is mocked and called a sissy. Ultimately, the story concludes as a tale about accepting one’s self and others, despite differences.

The story was told in an HBO animated special entitled, “The Sissy Duckling.”  In May 2002, publisher Simon and Schuster released a 40-page children’s book based on the cartoon.

Despite its positive message, the book, The Sissy Duckling, was challenged in 2004-2005 in Montgomery County, Texas.  The Fairfax County, Virginia based group, Parents Against Bad Books in Schools, includes the book on its list.
