“Frank Kameny’s Dress Code"

The earliest gay civil rights demonstrations in the 1960s took place in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.

Groups of gay and lesbian picketers developed strict rules for their protests. The Committee on Picketing from Washington’s Mattachine Society, of which Frank Kameny was a part, wanted to present the image of “acceptability, conventionality and respectability” during their demonstrations.

All gay and lesbian picketers followed a dress code – men would wear suits, white shirts and ties, and women would wear dresses.

Men should have recent haircuts and fresh shaves with beards discouraged.

Picket signs must be approved in advance and be neatly and clearly lettered, with marchers carrying only signs assigned to them and in the order assigned.  And of course, no smoking or taking refreshments were allowed on the picket line.
