“Gay Pioneer Frank Kameny Honored"

The LGBT community was shocked by the death of Frank Kameny in October 2011.  He had last spoken in public on September 30, 2011, when he gave a speech to a local LGBT group, and the next day attended his last Human Rights Campaign dinner.

In 2009, Kameny was presented with the Theodore Roosevelt Award from John Berry, Director of the Office of Personnel Management.  Berry, who is openly gay, apologized to Kameny on behalf of the U.S. government for his firing from his civil service job in 1957.

After Kameny’s death, the giant rainbow flag on the tall flagpole at the corner of Market and Castro Streets in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood was flown at half-staff for 24 hours.  That was on October 12, 2001, the day after Kameny’s death.
