“Allan Spear, the Forgotten Hero"

While San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk was among the first openly-gay elected officials in the U.S., three others beat him to the punch.

Kathy Kozachenko was elected to the Ann Arbor City Council in early 1974, and that November Elaine Noble was elected to the Massachusetts State Legislature.

Possibly the most forgotten hero of them all is Allan Spear.  In an interview with “Out and Elected in the US,” Spear credits Noble’s election as one factor that, as he put it, “helped push me over the line.”  He came out a month later, in December of 1974, in an interview in the Minneapolis Star during his first term as a Minnesota State Senator.  He was reelected in 1976, one year before Harvey Milk’s election success.
More about Spear tomorrow.
