Philadelphia Gay News"

Among the oldest LGBT newspapers in the U. S. is the Philadelphia Gay News (PGN).  It was founded as a monthly publication  by gay activist Mark Segal. Now published weekly, it serves as a mouthpiece for the Philadelphia LGBT community.

Its first edition came out on January 3, 1976, and sported a “lavender-colored front-page story about Dr. Walter J. Lear.” The headline read, “Philadelphia health official comes out.”

Now among the longest serving members of the LGBT press,  Segal led a 15-year effort to gain membership for Philadelphia Gay News in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, one of the nation’s oldest organizations for daily and weekly newspapers.  Those efforts paid off, with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette joining forces in support of PGN’s membership.
